I really appreciate the information received as I have known virtually nothing re: my Faneuff lineage beyond my grandfather, LEMUEL WILLIAM FANEUFF, brother to Rosalie Emma Faneuff, your great grandmother. I ask this because I would not want to interfere with your school business. I am age 62 and retired, so my e-mail and computer are in my office at home. Your information on direct descendants is most interesting and greatly appreciated. It will take me awhile to "digest". Thank you so much! A., CA] d/o Ellen Navarre [Mrs. Isaac Williams], and so neice both of Rose Emma Faneuff [via her blood uncle William Navarre] and of Israel Faneuff [via her blood aunt Emma Navarre]. Did I send you the URL for the Seeger/Sigler tombstones in Willow? http://www.walmart.com/agt/bounce.gsp?ID=0428oo2xhrbuzn2ebzp Can you help me with the Seeger siblings? It appears that this family's role is important in cementing the Faneuff/Navarre connection. Sorry to impose. Hope this is as interesting to you. My name is Jean-Marc Phaneuf. For several years, I made search on the history of the Phaneuf's ancestors. I would like to speak to you about one of the references which you give in your site. This reference is a translation of a artiche which already appeared in 1979 in the "NOS RACINES" review , No 22, " Nos Grandes Familles ". This text (in English or French) is full with errors: They say that Matthias living in America about 1628 near Lynn (they is false, it is more late, about 1655). They say that Matthias II was born in Lynn in 1649 (False). They say that Matthias II lived in Groton in Connecticut (False, Groton in Massachusetts). They say that Matthias III lived close of Deerfield (False, Groton). They also confuses " Jean Thomas Charpentier' (English captive) and " Gilles dit Jean Charpentier " (father of Catherine Charpentier, who became the woman of Claude-Mathias Fanef, born Farnsworth). Way which he is written, this text carries to confusion. Please, to remove it to you your references. My maiden name was Fanaff. I live in Toledo, Ohio. In doing some recent research I came across the Fanaff name in the Canada census. Many of the names were the same. I see now who those Fanaffs where and their relationship. I feel that at some time our spelling was altered. My grandfather Francis came from Huntsville, Ohio and he listed his father as having come from Canada. My niece has become quite interested in geneology and she feels that we are related to the Farnsworth family. I have no other info on my family and although I knew of the Faneuffs in Toledo I assumed there was no connection. I sent my niece your website and I'm sure it will help her alot. Thanks for your time. Paul Fanaff was my father. My mother's name was Mildred (weber) Fanaff. There are six of us children Anne (Fanaff) Sattler Allan Fanaff Virginia(Fanaff)Atkinson Barbara (Fanaff)Davenport Margaret(Fanaff)Pedee Terry (Fanaff) Kremnetz My father(Paul)had a brother named Arthur who married Emmaline. Paul's father was named Francis Fanaff. He was supposedly born May 2 1868 Huntsville,Ohio. Died Dec. 3 1947 in Lima, Ohio Buried Woodlawn cem., Lima. Francis married Martha Ellen Dunahay. Much research has been done by the Dunahay branch. Francis had 2 brothers-Alfred and James. Alfred never married and had no children James born in 1887 married Monna and had 1 son Anson Fanaff. Anson married Bertha they had 3 children James born 5-31-40 Michael born 4-29-52 Monna born 9-13-44 Now for the census of 1880 The Jane Fanaff mentioned is the mother of Francis, Alfred, and James and Mary. Jane's full name was Eliza Jane and her maiden name was Enoch. Catherine, her mother was married to a Henry Enoch which explains all those Enoch at home. Eliza Jane was married to a man named Francis Fanaff who seems to have died before 1880. It is a little confusing because her husband and son have the same name. Eliza Jane's husband is the man we have no information on so far. We think that he came from Canada even though the census says France. We don't have a birth or death time on him. I thought he might have been the Francis Fanaff we found in the Canada census but the information doesn't fit. They seem to be the Faneuffs that are here in Toledo Have I confused you too much? My niece's name is Beth (Fanaff) Penn and she is my brother's daughter. She has just begun searching and is very enthusiastic. You may hear from her. She is much better at using the internet than I am. I hope I have Helped you. Yours, Margaret > > Just a quick note on the census saying France. I'm using a transcription of the census and not the census itself. Frequently people coming from Canada in the census are listed Can (French) or Can (Eng). As far as I can tell there were no Phanafs in France itself. Thanks again for the info. joyce godfrey http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?ti=0&surname=fanaff&given= 1 Thomas K. Their son, LAWRENCE GREEN was born in Tilbury, Ontario in 1919. They had a total of 6 children. Her brother, WILLIAM PHANEUFF was born in 1898 in Michigan also. His wife was "CRISA". While WILLIAM & PEARL list their parents as "Canada-French" in the 1930 Census, CRISA's are "Canada-English". Their mother BELLE was 50 in 1930 and known as BELLE BURMAN. Also listed on the Census was BELLE's daughter from a marriage previous to PHANEUFF--FLORENCE HARRISON. She was born in 1897. My great-grandmother was his sister Rose Emma Faneuff. Many of the family spelled it with two final fs and many spelled the first letter as PH upon first arriving in Toledo. I had wondered why there was no record of Lemuel until the 1900s when other siblings were in the area much earlier. It looks like, after his MI marriage failed, he joined his family in the Walbridge area near Toledo. I had not seen you mention a name for Belle's Phaneuff spouse. How did you know he married Sigler in 1902? I am in contact with descendents of Lemuel "William" and Grace, do you want me to attempt a contact. They may not know of this previous marriage. How exciting! regards, Marshall Davies Lloyd PO Box 158 444 Water Lane Tappahannock, VA 22560 (804) 443-9444 Subject: Re: Phaneuff's-Michigan Creation Date: 10/28/02 12:44AM From: "eastlake" Marshall- My husband's family in southeastern Michigan & Canada (Windsor, Manitoba & Saskatchewan) thank you immensely. May I copy the family information for Lemeul and his ancestors for Pearl's family? I plan to order Pearl's birth certificate this week. Once I have confirmed the relationship of Belle ? & Lemeul I will forward our family history (4 generations with 15 grandchildren and 14+ great-grand-children) if you would like it for your site. As far as the connection to Lemeul "William" Phaneuf---Belle's son was named William and Lemeul did not show up in the Toledo area until 1902. Toledo is about 60 miles south of Detroit so it made sense. By all means, please contact Lemeul's descendents and explain the situation. Please give them my email address. If they do not have email, my telephone number is: (810) 367-3647. Normally it is quite a shock to a family to find unknown relatives. Especially involving a previous marriage with two children. I spoke to my 79 yr. old mother-in-law this week (oldest surviving in-law of Pearl's) and mentioned that Pearl Phaneuf Green had an older brother with a wife. No one in the entire family ever mentioned Pearl's brother, William. On top of it all he died 2 years before Pearl and not 10 miles away. You often wonder what could drive a brother and sister apart for so many years. Thank you again for solving the mystery. HISTORY: According to the 1930 Census, Thomas Alexander Green first came to the US in 1920. Pearl Green came with children (Gladys & James) in 1921. The story goes that it was too expensive to keep a third child but they "always intended to return him to the family in Detroit". Based on speaking to #3's daughter, Sylvia, her father, LAWRENCE GREEN, was born in Tilbury Dec. 19, 1920 and remained in Canada. Allegedly he was 'adopted" by Mr. & Mrs. Brusven in Ontario. (I really do not think so; he retained the GREEN family name until his death.) The only Brusven's I can locate in the Canadian 1901 Census and burial records are in and around Rainy River, Ontario (just north of Minnesota). Sylvia also mentioned that Mrs. Brusven corresponded with her until 20+/- years ago. Sylvia did not retain any of the letters. I am trying to explain how LAWRENCE JOSEPH GREEN, born in Tilbury, was raised 100's of miles away from the city of his birth. Eventually he spent his adult life as a farmer outside of Regina, Saskatchewan (but not that far from Winnepeg). Are there any Faneuf's in those areas? I have been doing research on the Faneuff family for some time. My grandmother was Olive Faneuff Scott, husband of Ed Scott. The photo you have of the gathering was taken in front of their home on South Main St., Walbridge, OH. And I feel you are correct that it was taken in 1907 (perhaps on Thanksgiving). There are no leaves on the trees. I have this very same photo in my collection. I can help identify a few of the people: No. 5 is RUSSELL HENRY SCOTT, born 20 Aug 1896. No. 8 is ERNE JAMES SCOTT, born 4 Aug 1898 (this is my father) No. 16 is WILLIAM ROSS SCOTT, born 6 June 1892 No. 17 is IRA EDWIN SCOTT, born 28 Aug 1890 (The above are the 5 children of Ed and Olive Faneuff Scott) No. 24 is OLIVE FANEUFF SCOTT, born 15 July 1872 No. 34 is ED SCOTT, born 12 Aug 1870. I also have the photo of Maxime & Ermine Faneuff's Daughters (mine is a tintype). But I think that the one standing is my grandmother. This is what I was always told by my father. I loved seeing all the other photos. Unfortunately, I never knew my grandfather, Ed Scott, as he died 4 years before I was born (he died in 1933.) I was very fortunate in knowing my grandmother, Olive - she was a peach. Her daughter, Olive, was also the same. I don't know too much about the Navarre family except that Rose Navarre and my grandmother were very close. Rose died on my grandmother's birthday. I looked up her obituary at the library. I hope I have been able to help. My husband and I enjoy genealogy so much. The Internet has been a wonderful tool! Sincerely, Reba Scott Harris e-mail: inro@mindspring.com Prob.?
